ABOUT BOLDER BOULDER TRAINING PLANS
In May of 1979, 2,700 runners lined up for the inaugural Bolder Boulder. Today, Bolder Boulder is the second-largest 10K in the United States and one of the five biggest road races in the world. Over 54,000 racers come to 30th and Walnut in downtown Boulder, CO, on Memorial Day of each year to participate in this wildly popular 10K race. Whatever your experience level, it's smart to prepare for every race you intend to run. However, the average free 10K training plan doesn't give you much more than a mileage schedule to follow. At Custom Training Plans, we take a personalized approach to race prep. Our Bolder Boulder training plans are designed to ready you for the hills, altitude, and other challenges you'll encounter on the course.
The Bolder Boulder course features a number of climbs and descents. While the climbs aren’t necessarily the biggest you’ll ever encounter, running a race at a higher elevation than you’ve trained at can be tricky. While you may not be able to simulate an oxygen-deficient training environment at home, you can do the next best thing. Our Bolder Boulder training plans help you build cardiovascular strength and endurance that you can rely on, no matter what your altitude.
As the race starts, you’ll face a long, fairly steady climb over the first 4 kilometers to Vista Hill. At the top of Vista Hill, you’ll be able to see the next 2 kilometers of your route where the course continues on, rolling up and down the hills to Casey Hill. At 5,391 feet, it’s the Bolder Boulder course’s highest point. When you choose Custom Training Plans to help you with your race prep, you get a program designed by professional athletic trainers that’s leaps and bounds beyond the free Bolder Boulder training plans you might find online. Our plans are customized to your fitness level, your goals, and the specifics of your race. Every CTP workout is created to help you build power, strength, and endurance that last the whole 10K.
Once you summit Casey Hill, it’s all downhill for 3 kilometers. While it’s tempting to show the descent who’s boss after all those hills, you’ll need to conserve some energy. You’ll need it – the last hill leading to the finish is steep! Following a CTP Bolder Boulder training plan can help you maintain a race pace that’s just right for you. Using a free 10K training plan to prep for a race like this can lead to injuries caused by undertraining. When you choose to train with CTP, you’ll receive a Bolder Boulder training program that takes into account your previous racing experience and your current fitness to optimize your performance safely.
The Bolder Boulder finish is at University of Colorado – Boulder’s Folsom Field. After entering the stadium, runners take a lap around the warmup track in front of a cheering crowd before they cross the finish line. The atmosphere at Folsom Field is second to none, and whether you’re a novice at the 10K distance or a seasoned pro, CTP can get you there with energy to spare. Experience the difference CTP can make with a customized Bolder Boulder training plan now.

Our method
-
With the expertise of USATF certified coaches and physical therapists, we built an advanced model to weigh the effects of runner-specific variables on training outcomes.
-
We analyzed unique characteristics of hundreds of races across the country to build a “race profile” into our model that accounts for elevation gain, altitude, time of year, and more.
-
Our model generates a unique training plan for you and your race, and all plans are reviewed by a coach and hand-tweaked before they make their way to you.
