ABOUT CHERRY BLOSSOM TEN MILE TRAINING PLANS
Founded in 1973, the Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run in Washington, D.C. is held on the first Sunday of April each year. The date is chosen to coincide with the blooming of the cherry blossoms. It also attracts many international running stars who use this race as a warm-up for the Boston Marathon, held around two weeks later. In addition to the 10-mile course, a 5K option is also offered. Whether you're starting your first 5K or you're a seasoned competitor, training properly is key. Custom Training Plans can help you get ready with customized programs that are designed to build strength, cardiovascular endurance, and power. Because each plan is customized to fit you and prepare you for the race you're planning to run, our Cherry Blossom Ten Mile training plans and Cherry Blossom 5K training plans reduce the risk of burnout and injury by adjusting the intensity of each workout to your current fitness level.
Both distances of the Cherry Blossom races start and finish at the Washington Monument, but which side you depart from depends on which race you’re running: the 10-mile or the 5K. The 5K course starts and finishes on at the southwest corner of the Washington Monument; the 10-mile race starts from the east side. After the 5K runners depart, the course skirts the Tidal Basin, where runners can see the Jefferson and Roosevelt Memorials across the water. The course then curves around the Lincoln Memorial as the runners head out-and-back to the Kennedy Center and return to the Washington Monument for the finish.
The 10-mile course covers the same ground as the 5K with many notable additions to the list of sights runners will see along the way, like Arlington National Cemetery, the Watergate complex, and Rock Creek Park. The extended course features a loop of nearly five miles in East Potomac Park that touches Hains Point before heading back toward the Washington Monument. According to finishers, this part of the race can be the most difficult – depending on the weather, racers may face very chilly headwinds off the Potomac, and there’s less crowd support here than near the Mall. Despite these challenges, you can set yourself up for success with a CTP Cherry Blossom Ten Mile training plan that helps you build physical endurance and confidence.

Our method
-
With the expertise of USATF certified coaches and physical therapists, we built an advanced model to weigh the effects of runner-specific variables on training outcomes.
-
We analyzed unique characteristics of hundreds of races across the country to build a “race profile” into our model that accounts for elevation gain, altitude, time of year, and more.
-
Our model generates a unique training plan for you and your race, and all plans are reviewed by a coach and hand-tweaked before they make their way to you.
