In November of each year, over 16,000 athletes participate in the Indianapolis Monumental Marathon, Half Marathon, and 5K. Since its beginnings in 2008, the Monumental Marathon has grown to become one of the largest marathons in the United States. The Monumental Marathon has a reputation for being one of the best fall marathons for first-time marathon runners. This race is also very attractive to those seeking new PRs and has even been a qualifying event for the Olympic Trials. No matter what end of the spectrum you're on, you can benefit from following a training schedule. Indianapolis Monumental Marathon Training Plans

The November weather in Indianapolis is typically perfect for running: low humidity and temperatures reaching into the upper 50s. Indianapolis offers rather flat topography; the courses feature very few changes in elevation. This makes the Monumental races particularly attractive for those who are trying out a new distance or who are running a race for the first time. The Monumental Half Marathon is run concurrently to the full marathon. The two races follow identical routes for approximately the first six miles, split, then come together for the final three miles of the course. All runners, whether in the 5K, half marathon, or marathon, follow an out-and-back loop through the streets of Indianapolis. The 5K race stays entirely within downtown Indianapolis, and it’s a perfect place for newer runners to make their racing debut. The longer races begin on Washington Street near the Indiana State Museum. The course follows what is largely a north-south route through the city, passing by Monument Circle, University Park, and Veterans Memorial Park. The half marathon turnaround occurs at East 37th Street, where runners begin making their way back to the finish line. Along the way, participants will also see many of the oldest and most historic neighborhoods of Indianapolis. The marathon route continues north, following Fall Creek before heading north to the Broad Ripple Neighborhood. Then, the route turns south and meanders back along the White River to reunite with the half marathon course as runners head into the home stretch.
