ABOUT NYC HALF MARATHON TRAINING PLANS
The New York City Half Marathon is a relatively young race, established in 2006. It's typically run on the fourth Sunday in March, and it's one of six in a series of half marathons that are run in the NYC area. The NYC Half gives 25,000 racers the opportunity to run through the heart of the city on a beautiful early-spring day. If you're preparing to line up for this race, Custom Training Plans can help you get ready with a customized NYC Half training plan. Our NYC Half training programs go beyond simply telling you when and how far to run, using cross-training to build all-around fitness. A customized approach to your NYC Half can help you avoid injury as you progress toward race day.
Whether you’re attempting your first half marathon or you’re seeking a personal milestone, the NYC Half Marathon is a great place. To train successfully, most racers should follow a half marathon training schedule that’s customized to their current fitness level. While you can find a variety of free half marathon training programs online, you’ll also find that most of these programs consist of a mileage calendar – and that’s it. Custom Training Plans offers NYC Half training plans that can help novices avoid overtraining and advanced racers increase speed and endurance.
The terrain of the NYC Half is split evenly between the small hills featured in Prospect and Central Parks and the flat streets of Brooklyn and Manhattan. The race begins in Prospect Park and immediately presents runners with a couple of miles of rolling hills to help warm up the legs. The route flattens out as it weaves through the streets of Brooklyn, giving runners a short opportunity to recover before tackling the race’s largest hill: the Manhattan Bridge. If your training program doesn’t include hill work, the course can be unforgiving. Preparing for this race with an NYC Half training plan that gets you ready for its ups and downs is a must.
At the summit of the Manhattan Bridge, runners are rewarded with top-notch views of the NYC skyline before descending into Manhattan. After hitting the 10K mark, runners take a quick tour of Chinatown before dropping down to follow FDR Drive. The three miles of flat, quiet road that follow can be difficult both mentally and physically, so choose an NYC Half training program that prepares you for this moment.
Though you must be ready to draw upon your energy reserves to make it to Midtown, the energy picks up as soon as the route turns past the United Nations Headquarters. The crowds continue to grow as the route passes Grand Central and turns toward Times Square. There are just a few small hills left to conquer once the course enters Central Park, so be sure to use an NYC Half training plan that readies you for course-specific features like these. CTP can help you reach the finish line by getting you ready to tackle anything the NYC Half course throws at you.

With the expertise of USATF certified coaches and physical therapists, we built an advanced model to weigh the effects of runner-specific variables on training outcomes.
We analyzed unique characteristics of hundreds of races across the country to build a “race profile” into our model that accounts for elevation gain, altitude, time of year, and more.
Our model generates a unique training plan for you and your race, and all plans are reviewed by a coach and hand-tweaked before they make their way to you.
