ABOUT PAT’S RUN TRAINING PLANS
Every year, thousands of runners from across the nation come together in Tempe, Arizona, to honor the life and legacy of Army Ranger Pat Tillman by taking part in Pat's Run. Before serving with the 75th Ranger Regiment in Afghanistan, Pat Tillman was well on his way to becoming an American football legend. He played three seasons in the NFL before the events of September 11, 2001, drew him to enlist. After completing Ranger School in late 2003, Tillman was deployed to Afghanistan, where he lost his life in April of 2004. Tillman's memorial run is a 4.2-mile loop that begins and ends at Arizona State University's Sun Devil Stadium, where he began his football career. If you're one of the 25,000 runners that's registered for this year's race, get ready with a Pat's Run training plan from Custom Training Plans.
Whether this is your first time participating in Pat’s Run or you’re a repeat finisher, it’s important to get your body ready to race. At Custom Training Plans, we go above and beyond what you might expect from a generic training program. Each of our Pat’s Run training plans is customized to your current fitness level and includes workouts that prepare you for this unique distance and the course-specific challenges you’ll face along the way. A Pat’s Run training plan from CTP is tailored specifically to your fitness level, helping you avoid injury by building cardiovascular strength and endurance at a safe pace with thoughtful, comprehensive workouts.
Pat’s Run begins in the ASU Sun Devil Stadium parking lot, where runners are sent off by a cheering crowd. Though the majority of Tempe is flat, the Pat’s Run course is designed to take advantage of the few hills in the area. After leaving the stadium, the course heads north to cross the Salt River before tackling the race’s largest hill on Curry Road. The shorter distance makes this race a great place to aim for a new PR, but to make that happen, you must train for Curry Road. Pat’s Run training programs from CTP don’t just prepare you for the miles – they also help you build the kind of strength needed to tackle specific course features with confidence.
After descending Curry Road, the route follows a handful of small hills near Tempe Town Lake before taking a flat, fast track back to the finish at Sun Devil Stadium. Runners head into the tunnel that leads them directly onto the football field, where the race finishes on the 42-yard line, a fitting way to honor Tillman and his legacy. Though the 4.2-mile distance may seem short and sweet, Tempe’s temperatures have the potential to be very hot, even in early spring. Following a customized Pat’s Run training plan is a great way to prepare, no matter where you’re starting from. Whether your goal is to get from the couch to the finish line or you’re looking to set a new course record, Custom Training Plans is here for you.

Our method
-
With the expertise of USATF certified coaches and physical therapists, we built an advanced model to weigh the effects of runner-specific variables on training outcomes.
-
We analyzed unique characteristics of hundreds of races across the country to build a “race profile” into our model that accounts for elevation gain, altitude, time of year, and more.
-
Our model generates a unique training plan for you and your race, and all plans are reviewed by a coach and hand-tweaked before they make their way to you.
